The Booming Craft Brewery Industry

There is an obvious difference between driving a Ford Focus and a Corvette. Flying first class is a completely different experience that sitting in seat 32B in the back of an airplane squished between two other passengers. And sitting down to watch the game with a Budweiser or Coors Light in front of you isn´t the same experience as enjoying a craft beer made from locally sourced hops and barley that incorporates a wide variety of accentuated flavors brewed to perfection.

During the past decade or so, the craft brewery industry has literally exploded across the country. If you head into any supermarket or liquor store across the country, the options of craft beers available to you usually take up much more space than the well-known, mass produced commercial beer options. From nationally renowned craft breweries such as Goose Island, to the small craft brewery located in the backroom of your neighbor´s home, the craft brewing industry is beginning to take an ever-larger share of the beer market in our country.

Nowhere is this increase in interest in craft breweries more apparent than in the town of Richmond, Virginia. On a sheer numbers basis, Richmond has the most craft breweries and wineries per capita than any other town or city in the country. But it´s not just the quantity of breweries that sets apart this cozy little town, but rather the passion and dedication that goes into making a quality brew.

As more and more people begin to engage in the craft brewery culture, efforts are being made to make sure that only beers of the highest quality are offered. The local university, Virginia Commonwealth University, even offers a craft brewery certification for anyone who wants to jump into this exciting line of work, either as a full time entrepreneurial adventure, or as a weekend hobby.

If you are looking for a great weekend getaway from the fast-paced life of DC, nothing is better than to visit the charming town of Richmond and enjoy a different craft beer offered at seemingly every corner of town. With so many different craft breweries to choose from, how do you go about choosing which one to visit?

The Veil Brewing Co. is one of the most well known of the Richmond breweries. They gained national attention for creating a stout from chocolate milk and Oreos, an interesting combination indeed. After having visited the Veil, you might want to check out the Richmond Beer Trail, a perfect introduction to the booming craft brewery industry that will lead you to at least 20 different breweries where you can sample (and buy) some of the best beer in the country.
